What started as a regular afternoon at the Kroger located at 4714 S. US Highway 41in Terre Haute quickly turned into the scene of a death investigation.
According to Vigo County Sheriff Derek Fell, Vigo County Deputies responded to the store around 12:30 p.m., to reports of a shooting in the parking lot.
“Deputies responded and they in fact located a male and female subject inside their vehicle up near the building who would appear to have both been shot,” Fell said.
The vehicle also crashed into a brick pillar outside the front door of the store.
“At this time, we’re not able to say if the shots occurred before or after,” Fell said. “I can tell you at this time that the female subject is unfortunately deceased, and the male subject is in critical condition right now at this time,” he added.
Sheriff Fell confirmed that a young girl was also inside the vehicle during the incident.
“There was a small female child inside of the vehicle is what we’ve been told at the time of the incident,” he said. “She was able to exit the vehicle and run inside the store to obtain help.”
Sheriff Fell told WTWO that the child was uninjured and that no other injuries were reported.
Detectives are reviewing surveillance videos and speaking with potential witnesses to piece together exactly what led to the violence.
“We work every scene the same, which is very methodical,” Fell said. “They’ll be taking photographs, measurements, things of that nature,” he added.
The sheriff confirmed that the two adults are believed to have known each other, but wouldn’t comment whether any type of altercation took place inside the store before the shooting.
An autopsy is expected in the coming days.
The Kroger store has since reopened.
This is a developing story. WTWO will update as more information is released.
