TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The Fourth of July is coming up this weekend, and a local veterinarian wants pet owners to know and be aware of how stressful the Fourth of July can be for their pets.
Dr. Michael Staub with the Honey Creek Animal Hospital said the loud noises from the fireworks can be similar to a thunderstorm for a dog. This can cause them to be stressed and overwhelmed during the festivities. He wants pet owners to make sure that the dogs are in a calm and safe environment while the fireworks are going off.
“The noise issue is kind of like thunderstorms for dogs, they get really a lot of severe anxiety, basically, they can really harm themselves if they’re not in a situation where they’re kept safe, so you want to make sure if you have a dog, that’s really afraid of the fireworks that they’re either in a room that’s safe for them where they can’t hurt themselves, maybe a crate.” said Dr.Staub
He also mentioned that using items like a Thundervest or calming chews can help the dog during these stressful times for them.
