VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— A chip and seal project has begun on State Road 46 near the State Road 59 intersection.
It’s part of a major chip and seal operation that INDOT is doing in Vigo and the surrounding counties. This type of road work involves putting oil and gravel down on the roads and then sealing them to help maintain the roads. Public Relations Director Blake Dollier said a project like this will help repair roads quickly, and these are very important for the upkeep of roads and highways in the state of Indiana.
“Chip seal operations are a maintenance operation here that INDOT does every summer, and what it does,” said Dollier. “It extends the life of the roadway for approximately 7 to 10 years. What that does is it does it in a cheaper, better way for the taxpayer to be better stewards of the taxpayer dollars, and it just really helps us be able to keep these roads in their best possible shape for many years to come.”
Dollier adds that a project like this will last about a week with weather permitting.
