FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The United States Postal Service would like to remind the public, ahead of the holiday, that it is prohibited to mail fireworks.
All types are prohibited, including sparklers, firecrackers, bottle rockets, and roman candles. Fireworks are considered hazardous materials and are banned by the postal service through all their ground and air services. The ban is due to the perceived threat to safety.
“Shipping fireworks through the mail puts our employees, customers, and transportation networks at serious risk,” said Acting Postmaster General and CEO Doug Tulino. “Even small items like firecrackers or bottle rockets can cause fires, explosions, or injuries if mishandled.”
The USPS use a wide array of tools such as technology and inspection protocols to asses mail and packages in an effort to keep employees safe and detect non-mailable items.
Those who are caught mailing fireworks can face civil penalties, criminal charges, and other consequences. The Postal Inspection Service opened 1,700 investigations regarding hazardous materials attempting to be sent in 2024, including fireworks and explosives.
