TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — As the Fourth of July holiday week approaches, the Indiana State Police is urging drivers to stay safe on the roads when traveling.
People will be jamming the roads in what is expected to be record breaking numbers for holiday travel this year. Officials expect more than 72-million people to travel to celebrate the 4th, and that is not limited to flying.
AAA says 1.9 million Hoosiers will travel over 50 miles or more over the ‘holiday period’ from Saturday, June 28th and running through Sunday, July 6th.
Sergeant Matt Ames with the Indiana State Police wants everyone to enjoy the holiday but always wants everyone to be safe as this is the time of year local law enforcement sees a major uptick in auto-mobile accidents.
“This is a very trying time for us, as we’re doing traffic enforcement with the Indiana State Police. We call it the 100 deadliest days from Memorial Day all the way to Labor Day,” said Ames.
The 100 deadliest days is in reference to teen drivers being three times more likely to be involved in a fatal car crash during this period, according to AAA.
“Let’s be safe out there, let’s make sure we’re obeying the posted speed limits, not driving while distracted and we are buckled up the entire time. Let’s have the safest 100 days we can here in the state of Indiana,” Sergeant Ames.
