CHICAGO, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV)— Illinois Governor Pritzker signed the new state budget that includes a historic expansion of the Child Tax Credit.
According to the news release from Economic Security IL, they believe this to be a major win for working-class families in Illinois. The budget will make the new Child Tax Credit up to $600 per child in eligible households with kids under 12 in the next fiscal year. To be eligible, you need to be a working family at or below the state’s median income with at least one child under the age of 12
“In the face of rising costs, the Governor and General Assembly kept their promise to support Illinois families,” said Sarah Saheb, Director of Economic Security Illinois. “Doubling the Child Tax Credit puts money directly into the hands of parents who need it most and helps cover essentials like groceries, rent, and childcare. This is a tangible, direct investment in working families that will make a real difference in their daily lives.”
This has been done after a multi-year campaign by Economic Security Illinois and partner organizations in the Illinois Cost-of-Living Refund Coalition. The Illinois Child Tax Credit was established only two years ago and was the first of its kind in the state. The expansion will now increase the credit to 40% of the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit.
