VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — On Saturday morning, the Vigo County School Corporation held a second listening session, providing another chance for the community to speak on the recent facility study.
At the Terre Haute Convention Center, people packed in to participate.
These sessions were facilitated by non-biased personnel to allow community members to speak freely. Chris Himsel, Superintendent for Vigo County School Corporation, said these sessions are vital in helping the school board to make a decision.
Himsel also said everyone understands the Vigo County Schools need updated but have differing opinions on how it will be implemented.
“It’s important for our community to understand the realities of our school corporation and then it’s important for us to continue to get feedback, but we need that feedback, based in those realities. Not based on the emotion of the moment, but of the realities of what we are really dealing with,” said Himsel.
Through small group discussions, people can bounce ideas off each other and have their voices heard. Saturday was Amy Demchak’s first time facilitating a discussion and Demchak was eager to hear from her group.
“These listening sessions are really important. I think it helps everyone get involved and invested in the future of the school corporation. What’s best for our students, our parents, the employees, and the community at large,” said Demchak.
Himsel said the next step is for the school board to synthesize all of the information from their employees, Gibraltar, listening sessions, online survey, as well as financial and demographical data. Himsel anticipates there will be more listening sessions in the future.
For those who were unable to attend the listening sessions, VCSC has a survey on their site at Board – Vigo County School Corporation.
