TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Demolition is underway at the site of the former Terre Haute police headquarters, and Mayor Brandon Sakbun said work is running smoothly.
The $13 million project will demolish the old structure and build a three-story building complex in its place. The idea comes from a Thrive study done by the city in the fall of 2023, which revealed a need for housing across the community. The new complex will have a total of 111 one-bedroom units, which Mayor Sakbun said are perfect for newcomers to the downtown area.
“One of the biggest reasons why people want to move downtown is those quality of life amenities,” said Mayor Sakbun. “Having access to Copper Bar, Ladybird, Terminal, The Children’s Museum, and the Swope Art Museum. We’re really creating a nice entertainment district downtown that a lot of folks like. A lot of folks don’t want to take care of a yard, so they look for opportunities to rent instead of own. Plus, when you look at access to Indiana State University and some of our employment opportunities downtown, you see that push as well.”
Demolition is expected to be done in the next month, and then construction will begin.
The project is expected to be done by the fall of next year.
