UPDATE: The driver of the SUV involved in a multiple-vehicle crash that killed two juveniles was allegedly under the influence and “did not know any of the four passengers in her vehicle,” according to court documents.
On June 7, the Terre Haute Police Department responded to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of South 13th Street and Oak Street.
According to Lt. Justin Sears, an SUV —driven by Misty L. Casey, 30— was traveling west on Oak St. and failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of South 13th St. and Oak St, causing the vehicle to collide with a truck traveling and roll over.
According to court documents, a witness to the crash said they saw Casey driving at a high rate of speed, and multiple females were sitting outside the windows of the vehicle. The witness said Casey was driving recklessly and ran every posted stop sign on Oak Street.
Multiple witnesses allegedly saw Casey driving recklessly with the passengers hanging out the window, according to court documents. Another witness to the crash said they also saw Casey run a red light at the intersection of 19th and Poplar, prior to the crash.
According to court documents, one of the passengers in Casey’s vehicle said that when they got into the vehicle, they saw an alcoholic drink, and Casey allegedly told them that she was drunk. The passenger said they told Casey to “take me back,” but Casey said, “no, then we would be backtracking,” according to court documents.
A second passenger said Casey picked them up at their home with the three other passengers already in the vehicle, and while Casey was driving, three of the four passengers were hanging out the windows and sunroof.
A certified blood draw confirmed that Casey had a blood alcohol content of 0.22 and tested positive for THC, said Sears.
While speaking to police, Casey allegedly told them she had two shots of liquor called 99 proof between 9 a.m. and Noon, Saturday morning. Casey also told police she didn’t know the four passengers in the vehicle and was taking them to a hair store, according to court documents.
Casey allegedly admitted to police that the passengers were hanging out the window, but said she told them to get back in the car, said court documents.
Casey was then charged with confinement and two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated resulting in death.
