GREENE COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Many families in the state of Indiana struggle with the multiple stages of pregnancy, that’s why in Greene County, a program has been added to help.
In 2019, Greene County Hospital added a Perinatal Navigator Program to their nearby Linton Clinic.
Perinatal Navigator Nikki Page said the goal is to serve families before, during, and after pregnancy.
“The state of Indiana has a high infant and maternal mortality rate, so we wanted to come together and create a program to help reduce that”, Page said. “We want families to have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies and help babies reach their first birthday.”
The program allows any women that is a Greene County resident to receive services like one-on-one counseling and therapy, without any cost to them.
Peyton Goodwin is a Perinatal Social Worker in Greene County. She said there are also solutions for people who have difficulty getting to appointments.
“The transportation piece is huge”, Goodwin said. “A lot of women and families can’t get to and from doctor’s appointments, let alone therapy appointments. Being able to go in the homes and also provide phone calls as well to achieve that goal.”
OB Navigator and Community Health Worker Bridgett Edwards said their biggest role is standing with women through the journey.
“That’s the number one thing we hear is that our patients feel that they are all alone and have no support system”, Edwards said. “We are here to help with any kind of resources and give that support system where you don’t have to go through this alone.”
