MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) — Six people were displaced, and one firefighter was injured after an apartment fire on Tuesday in Mattoon.
The Mattoon Fire Department responded to a structure fire near the area of 20th St. and Champaign Ave. at 10 a.m.
When they arrived, they found a garage, which had been converted into an apartment, with heavy smoke and fire coming out. Firefighters were told that residents had safely exited the structure.
Crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly and brought the fire under control in less than 10 minutes. Six adults were displaced, and the electricity was shut off due to several “code violations” that were found in the apartments, the fire department said.
One firefighter received a minor hand injury. The firefighter was treated and has since been released from a local hospital.
Fire officials are still investigating how the fire started. The Mattoon Police Department, Charleston Fire Department, Ameren gas and electric and American Red Cross assisted in the response.
Firefighters were able to clear the scene just after noon.
