TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Summer is the time for bonfires, cookouts and a fun day at the pool, but those summer activities can also pose a lot of dangers.
That’s why the Terre Haute Fire Department is giving the community some summer safety tips so you can enjoy some fun in the sun safely.
THFD Captain Nick Arnold said it’s important to stay hydrated during the summer months. He recommends everyone drink 64 ounces of water a day, and for children under the age of eight to drink one eight-ounce drink per their age.
Arnold also warns people about using proper fire safety in the summertime.
“Keep it manageable. If you’re in the city limits, please follow the burn ordinance that you can find on our website or the city’s website. Always have a means of extinguishment available. Never burn near any type of structure. And as we mentioned on our Facebook page the other day, please do not use torches burning weeds or any other type of vegetation, especially if it is near any type of structure,” said Arnold.
Arnold added that it’s also important elderly people stay hydrated with water and electrolytes, and to make sure they are taking frequent breaks while working outside.
