GREENE COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The night of May 16th brought severe weather to the Greene County area, including a tornado that caused millions of dollars in damages to businesses and homes.
Now, the county is desperately searching to get the help they need.
Organizations like the Southern Baptist Convention and Helping His Hands have been crucial the last 13 days.
One resident, Thaniel Heath, said he lost dozens of trees around his home and would have never been able to clean up without them.
“It’s truly a blessing”, Heath said. “It’s nice to see local folks come by and help those who still need attention in our community.”
Helping His Hands is based in Vincennes but has assisted residents around the country. CEO Jason Burkhart said when disaster strikes locally, it is always their top priority.
“The residents have been going to the armory”, Burkhart said. “We have been working hand-in-hand with the Southern Baptist Division of Indiana as well, so we’ve been tag-teaming that. They’ve been throwing guys on chainsaws, and we’ve been using our equipment and volunteers, just kind of working together with them.”
Greene County President of Commissioners Nathan Abrams said the county is currently working with the state to receive help and funding, but it will take time.
Right now, local organizations are carrying the burden.
“The Red Cross has been a tremendous help”, Abrams said. “We’ve had many volunteer groups come through and help clean and provide different types of services, supplies, that kind of stuff. That has been a great blessing for us.”
If you are a Greene County resident and in need of assistance after the severe weather, the Red Cross is currently taking applications.
