VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Earlier this week, a Vincennes Community School Corporation teacher was recognized after she helped a child who was choking.
Earlier this spring, the classroom was shaken after one of Renea Wild’s students suddenly started to choke.
“He comes in, and I guess he was chewing on his pencil in the hallway, and I guess it got lodged in his throat, and he comes in, and at first I didn’t know what was happening. Then I looked in his throat and I see it and immediately started doing the heimlich maneuver. It was very nerve-wracking,” said Wild.
Thankfully, in college, Wild learned the life-saving technique.
“We got the training, but you never think that’s going to be part of your day… It’s my job. I mean, as a teacher you wear a lot of different hats, and heimlich maneuver was my hat that day,” said Wild.
After saving the child’s life, Wild was presented a Certificate of Heroism by Vincennes City Fire Chief Bret Bobe. Wild said it was an amazing experience to be recognized by her peers and student.
“It’s good to see your student looking at you like wow my teacher is kind of a super star, and that’s a great feeling to have,” said Wild.
Wild said even though she is only in her second year, this experience has made her more confident in dealing with emergency situations in the classroom.
“We’re told to quickly react. We’ve got to react to everything that comes our way. Definitely, I’m more confident in myself to react to those things and have that quick thinking,” said Wild.
