MARSHALL, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV)— After more than 28 years of informing the community in Marshall, Illinois, the Marshall Advocate newspaper has decided to close.
According to the paper’s Facebook page, they have released their last issue as of Wednesday.
“For over twenty-eight years, the Advocate has worked hard to serve our community by providing you with pages full of news from our local area,” the paper stated in its post. “But, when we started, cell phones weren’t in general use and social media didn’t exist.”
The post sites that the paper had become more irrelevant to many people with the changing of the times, thus making it hard for small-town papers to stay financially viable.
“The Advocate has not been immune to this changing landscape and, as such, we must now bid farewell,” said the paper in the social media post.
The Advocate went on to thank all the support they received from staff, subscribers, and advertisers they’ve had throughout the years.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve our community with this paper,” The Marshall Advocate stated.
The newspaper states that during its over 28 years in print, they had 2,657 editions with over 30,000 pages of news covering the area.
“We are proud of what we have done, but we are also realistic about the future,” the post continued. “We thank you sincerely for your loyalty over the years.”
