TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun made a statement on Facebook Friday banning Champion Contractors from working in city limits after their employee was arrested on murder charges.
The statement comes from the Terre Haute Mayor’s Office Facebook Page and states:
“Earlier this week, an out-of-town contractor had employees involved in a violent crime. They were not doing any projects within the city limits. I have decided to ban them from getting any building permits within city limits. This is a proactive decision meant to send a very clear message. If you are a contractor doing work in our city, plan on ensuring all employees have the appropriate documentation.”
This comes after the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Wilson Chavez, the man arrested on a murder charge after a shooting at Candlewood Suites in downtown Terre Haute, was in the U.S. illegally.
“We love all the work going on in the city, from in-state and out-of-state contractors who obey by the rules of the City of Terre Haute, as it pertains to our building code. That’s a fancy way of saying this is a very targeted approach. Right. We’re concerned with one specific company and the actions of their individuals. As you will see across town, we’re not concerned with the 99% of companies and individuals that do things correctly,” said Mayor Sakbun.
WTWO has reached out to Champion Contractors, and they have not responded to our request for a comment.
