SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)—The Sullivan County community came together Wednesday to bid farewell to five high school seniors who have chosen to serve their country.
Family, friends, and community members gathered to honor the young men who enlisted in the armed forces.
This was the eighth Military Send-off.
“We started this to recognize high school seniors who are joining the military because they kind of fall to the wayside,” Kevin Arnett, an organizer of the event, said. “A lot of focus is on athletics, and we want to put the focus on military because it’s very important to recognize them and their willingness to serve and sacrifice for us to be a free country,” he added.
Active military and Veterans spoke to the recruits about the importance of their decision and offered them advice.
The event is put on strictly by volunteers in the community.
“We have everything donated to us, including free steak dinners for their (the recruits’) family,” Arnett said. The dinners were provided by the Elks Veterans Association.
