TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Here in the Wabash Valley, residents are also excited about the new pope.
Friar Bob Showers is a local pastor at St. Benedict’s and St. Joseph’s Church.
He said the fact that the cardinals made a decision on just the second day is a good sign that there was little discussion and debate.
He believes by choosing the name Pope Leo, the new pope will look to follow in the previous Pope Leo’s footsteps, focusing on the social aspects of the church.
“He chose the name Pope Leo XIV, said Showers. “I am going to guess he wanted to send a signal that he would have many of the same priorities as Pope Leo XIII, who very much wanted to make the church’s social teachings front and center in the life of the church.”
Friar Showers said the most interesting thing to watch for next will be what countries the pope decides to visit.
