SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A railroad crossing in Sullivan County will soon be a thing of the past.
You may have crossed the problem tracks along U.S. 41 in Shelburn. They’re currently in bad shape. A plan of the highway at the crossing is closed in each direction.
Sullivan County Councilwoman Jackie Monk worked to find a solution to years of issues.
Monk said after contacting several entities, she’s been in contact with the company that leases the tracks, Cathcart. Cathcart is said to be a railroad car repair business.
Monk said the process to get the tracks fixed or removed had moved slowly until Tuesday morning, when there was a near accident involving a school bus. Monk said a report was made to Cathcart, and soon after, Cathcart said the track would be removed at the end of May.
“Now I’m holding my breath that they stick with what they say,” Monk said. “It is a very dangerous intersection, and I hope that we can get this replaced before somebody gets in a bad accident and is killed,” she added.
WTWO reached out to Cathcart for a statement and has not yet heard back.
Monk tells us that Cathcart will work with the Indiana Department of Transportation on the project.
This is a developing story. WTWO will provide more information and plans for the construction as the information becomes available.
