CLAY CITY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)—The Wabash Valley Community Foundation awarded $91,000 to seven Clay County non-profit organizations on Thursday through their Clay County affiliate.
An award ceremony was held on Thursday at the Buell Community Center in Clay City, Indiana to give out the spring grants. The organizations that received the funding have projects in place to help improve the lives of the residents of Clay County by strengthening recreational and educational opportunities and meeting the needs of local children.
“If we were unable to fund these or they were unable to get funding elsewhere, these projects would not happen. And there truly things that enrich the quality of life for the kids here in Clay County,” President and CEO of Wabash Valley Community Foundation Beth Tevlin said.
The following organizations received grants from Wabash Valley Community Foundation:
- Clay City Youth League – $6,500 in support of new fencing around the ballpark.
- Clay Community Parks Association – $7,000 in support of the Craig Park Bridge
landscaping and beautification project. - Clay County Optimist Club – $4,500 in support of the Clothe-A-Child program, which
provides essential clothing to children in need. - Clay County YMCA – $12,000 in support of updating the youth programming space with
new equipment and activities. - Clay County Genealogical Society – $30,000 in support of the construction of a larger
genealogy library. - Terre Haute Symphony Association – $6,000 in support of music education tours to all
seven elementary schools in Clay County. - Town of Harmony – $25,000 in support of repurposing and restoring the tennis courts at
Harmony Park into pickleball courts
The funding for these grants comes from individuals, families, and businesses that contribute to unrestricted community grant funds held by the foundation. Earnings from these funds are then awarded as competitive grants that focus on charitable projects. Due to help from the Lilly Endowment Inc.’s GIFT matching challenge grants, the amount available to give has nearly doubled over the last decade.
Donors currently have the ability to triple their gifts to the foundation to create larger impacts in Vigo, Clay, and Sullivan County. Due to the new GIFT initiative, contributions to any new or existing community grant fund will be matched two dollars for every one dollar donated until matching dollars run out. Gifts of cash, stock, IRA rollovers, Qualified Charitable Distributions, and many other charitable gifts can be used for the matching dollars. If you’re interested in donating you can contact the community foundation at 812-232-2234 or visit this link.
