WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Platforms in the weight room at West Vigo High School needed improving and some students took it upon themselves to update them.
Students in manufacturing class have started building new platforms with epoxy on them.
The epoxy gives the platforms a glossed look, allowing the students to put motivational messages on them.
David Basan is the manufacturing teacher at West Vigo High School. He said his wife found the idea on social media and the students have been working every day during their class period.
Basan said these new platforms will last much longer than the older plywood.
“If the kids take care of them, these platforms should last a long time”, Basan said. “As long as weights aren’t being slammed down on them like you can see with the old plywood ones. I think they’re a lot classier and will be very durable for the long run.”
Because the platforms will last years down the road, one student, James Haymaker, said it will be great to graduate West Vigo and know something you created will still be there.
“It’s been just our class period, so five of us”, Haymaker said. “We’ve been working on it every day for a couple of months. It’s pretty cool. I’m looking forward to talking to my friends about it and bragging about it.”
The students have multiple platforms done already and are planning on finishing one more before the school year ends in May.
