TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Scams through text messages and calls have become popular recently and the latest one involves Duke Energy.
District Manager for Duke Energy, Rick Burger, said they’ve had several cases reported from customers of strange calls saying their services will be turned off immediately if they don’t pay.
Burger said a few customers have gone ahead and paid, only to find out later it is a scam.
The messages and calls look, and sound, similar to Duke Energy’s notifications, however, Burger said, there are a few ways to tell the difference.
“You’ll never get a call from Duke Energy threatening you to pay now”, Burger said. “You’re always given warnings by text or emails on where you are on your accounts, so never do we threaten people on that. Another thing too is asking for personal information. We don’t do that, we really don’t, so don’t be passing out your information like that. Another thing, we don’t turn services off immediately.”
If you receive one of these scam calls, Duke Energy asks that you immediately hang up and report it to Duke Energy at 800-544-6900, as well as notify law enforcement.
