VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — UPDATE: According to a news release from the Indiana State Police, the male suspect shot this morning during a police standoff has died from his injuries. The deceased individual was identified as 57-year-old Michael Landers of Dana, Indiana. The officer involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave.
ORIGINAL: Multiple law enforcement agencies were on scene Wednesday morning after a person was shot by a police officer, authorities said.
Indiana State Police said they are investigating the shooting. The incident happened on East County Road 700 near Dana.
Sgt. Matt Ames said the situation began before 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, when a man “brandished a firearm” at a family member who was visiting the suspect’s home to do a welfare check. After the family member left the suspect’s home, the family member called 911.
Later, when members of the Terre Haute Police Department SWAT Team arrived, he pointed a firearm at them, Ames said. An officer then shot him, Ames added.
The suspect was rushed to a local hospital and then transferred to a hospital in Champaign, Ill.
