LINTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — FFA teachers and members at Linton Stockton say that agriculture affects everybody, everyday.
That’s why, Tuesday, they held their first annual ag day for 5th grade students.
Kevin Cross, FFA ag teacher and advisor, said the goal of the day was to show students how ag effects them, especially in the area they live.
“Helping them understand that what they are walking on isn’t just dirt, it’s soil, and how important that is”, Cross said. “Without that, we aren’t going to be able to grow anything. Help them understand what the different parts of a plant are that we eat and how plants are the most important things that we eat. Helping them understand how to be safe in an area that has so much agriculture, hunting, and outdoor recreation.”
Members of the Linton Stockton High School FAA Chapter lead the event, including Chapter President Arianna Chancey. They gave demonstrations and lessons on a number of agricultural topics.
“They’ll learn some tractor safety, some dos and don’ts”, Chancey said. “We’ve got a soil area to test some samples of soil. We have some hunters’ education, where they are going to learn how to properly climb a tree into a tree stand and dos and don’ts of gun safety and hunting safety in general. We’ve also got some people that are planting plants with the students and then tree measurements. We have a little bit of everything and it all kind of resembles what we offer here for ag classes at Linton Stockton.”
Cross said the Linton Stockton FFA Chapter, with every event, hopes to form leaders, expand ag knowledge, and involve the entire community.
“We’re growing leaders because our students are the ones who are leading these sessions, our students are the ones doing it, so it’s growing leaders”, Cross said. “Strengthening agriculture, teaching kids about the agricultural industry and also building up our community and community awareness.”
The Linton Stockton FFA Chapter said they hope to continue the event in the years to come, in hopes of getting more kids interested in agriculture at a young age.
