TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A local police department is currently putting a special emphasis on school bus stop arm violations.
Terre Haute Police officers will be following different school buses from April 21 through May 2. Officers will be on the lookout for drivers who violate school bus arms, as well as aggressive and distracted drivers. THPD Public Information Officer Lt. Justin Sears said there are some important things for drivers to remember.
“Divided highways, you still need to stop both ways if it’s not completely blocked with a barricade or median,” said Lt. Sears. “If it’s two lanes, absolutely all traffic stops. If it’s a divided highway and there’s a barrier, then just the traffic behind the bus has to stop, so those are important things to remember.”
THPD shared an informational post about the rules here. Lt. Sears said stop arm violations usually result in an infraction, but he said it could be elevated to a misdemeanor in certain scenarios.
