(WTWO/WAWV) — A local Wabash Valley resident reacts to the Trump Administration suing the state of Maine’s Education Department for its policy of allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls’ sports.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the legal action on Wednesday, saying Maine’s policy violates Title IX’s prohibition of sex-based discrimination.
As sources report, Maine officials have refused to agree with a settlement, that would have banned transgender students from sports, arguing that the law does not prevent schools from letting transgender athletes to participate.
Shannon Steele, a transgender woman and Wabash Valley resident states she agrees with the Trump Administration’s stance on transgender athletes.
“If you’re not willing to take into account the possibility that girls are uncomfortable, girls are afraid of getting hurt, they’re afraid of reprisal from speaking out about their concerns,” said Steele. “We should be at a point where (girls) are included in the conversation.”
Steele is also a podcast called Chronicles of a Nation, where she speaks about current issues.
Moving forward, Attorney General Bondi says other state could face similar lawsuits.
