TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The Executive Director for the Vigo County Public Library has decided to step down after 12 years in the position.
Kristi Howe has been the Executive Director of the library since 2012 and has been the lead force on several initiatives during her tenure. Some of these initiatives include relocating and revitalizing the West Branch of the library and the launch of the 12 Points location. Howe is also known for supporting employees through the COVID-19 pandemic and expanding community outreach and engagement. Howe said she has enjoyed the position serving the community but is ready for a change.
“I’ve been VCPL director for just over 12 years now, and with another 20 years still to work
before I retire, I feel it is time for a new adventure,” said Howe. “I’ve loved working here. I am
confident that the new director will enjoy working here every bit as much as I have, and I
believe that organizations need change to thrive.”
The library was also recognized with three awards from the Indiana Library Federation while under Howe’s leadership, including Library of the Year. Howe was also one of the first recipients of the 12 Under 40 award in Terre Haute and received a Women in Business award.
Howe’s time with the library will conclude on May 9. Later in May, she will be taking on a new challenge as the Executive Director of the Fox River Valley Public Library District. Howe will be attempting to help library administration make a smooth transition to the new Executive Director once they are chosen. Until then, the Vigo County Public Library Board will select an interim director. The announcement of a replacement is expected to come at the next board meeting April 21.
