TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Indiana State University is celebrating 100 years of its Sycamore Bands program.
A centennial celebration took place on Friday. The event featured a concurrent resolution sponsored by State Senator Greg Goode and State Representative Tonya Pfaff.
Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun also issued a proclamation designating March 28 as Sycamore Bands Day.
ISU Director of Bands Eric Scott said the program had small beginnings with about 20 members and the Teacher College Band.
He said it has since grown to a program that includes the Marching Sycamores, the Concert Band, the Wind Orchestra, the Basketball Band and more.
“We’ve had a wonderful legacy that’s included international tours, performances for presidents and collaborations with nationally acclaimed composers, and so we’re really here to celebrate the accomplishments of our students and anticipation for the next hundred years,” said Scott.
He added 55% of the program’s members come from the School of Music, another third represents the College of Arts and Sciences, while the remaining members come from the entire university.
