SULLIVAN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Sullivan Police Department has released new information about the criminal charges that an employee at Mattoon High School is facing.
In a press release posted on its Facebook page, Sullivan Police identified the employee as Jace Logan, 27 of Mattoon. The school district lists him as a paraprofessional on its website.
Sullivan Police said Logan is charged with five counts of criminal sexual abuse, and that the criminal conduct he is accused of happened in 2017. The other person involved in that conduct, a teenage girl, was at least five years younger than Logan when it occurred.
Officials said the charges were filed after an investigation by the Sullivan Police Department that started one year ago. Investigators were informed of an incident that was alleged to have happened in Sullivan seven years prior.
Once the investigation was complete, the case was turned over to the State’s Attorney’s Appellate Prosecutor’s Office of Illinois for review. On Monday, five counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse were field against Logan.
In most cases, including this one, aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim five years younger than the accused is a Class 2 felony. A person convicted of this crime can be punished with either probation or 3-7 years in prison. They will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.
Logan was issued a summons to appear in court on April 28, Sullivan Police added.
MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) — An employee of Mattoon High School is on administrative leave after the school said criminal charges were filed against them.
Tim Condron, Superintendent of the Mattoon School District, said in a release that the district had been made aware of the charges and is “actively responding” to the situation. Condron did not name the employee involved and did not disclose the charges against them, but they did say the charges were filed outside of Coles County.
“There is no indication that the criminal charges are related to any student in our school,” Condron said. “The District is cooperating with local law enforcement and will continue to do so throughout the ongoing investigation.”
Condron said any questions regarding this matter can be made to the Mattoon Police Department.
WCIA reached out to Mattoon Police for more information and was referred to the Sullivan Police Department.
This is a developing story.
