TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO-WAWV)– It’s important that veterans, have an opportunity to connect with other vets. So, for the second straight year, a special “Welcome Home” dinner will be held for Vietnam veterans. Last year, was a big success and this year promises more the same.’
In 2024, Brian Mundell of the Veterans Memorial Museum of Terre Haute organized a dinner for Vietnam veterans at Rick’s BBQ. It gave dozens of area vets the chance to talk.
Dave Runyan was encouraged by his wife to go and he’s glad he did.
“They say it a lot if you weren’t there you don’t understand. Well you’re in a roomful of people who understood. And you can talk openly. It was just a feel good thing,” said Runyan.
Runyan was also encouraged to attend the dinner, by Vietnam veterans Ray Watts and Tony
Bauer, but unfortunately both of them passed away over the past year.
Runyan has a bit of advice, if a Vietnam vet is a little hesitant about going.
“Just show up I mean get with people who understand you and get a free dinner, said Runyan.
The “Welcome Home” dinner will be held Saturday March 29th at the Sycamore Country Club located at 200 Heritage Drive at 5 pm.
It’s only for Vietnam veterans, so no spouses or children, and it is intended for the men and women who set foot in Vietnam or served on a ship outside of Vietnam.
