TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — There are a lot of things that are needed to do on a daily basis to keep the Terre Haute Humane Society functioning properly. So, as a part of WTWO/WAWV and the Humane Society’s Tail-A-Thon coverage, reporter Zach Stidham spoke with humane society officials about what it takes to maintain the facility.
A lot of what employees do at the Terre Haute Humane Society is unseen. Employees there spend countless hours cleaning and caring for animals with the hope that one day they will find a forever home.
Every day at the humane society starts with feeding the animals, followed by a cleaning of the animal’s individual space. This cleaning will then continue all the way up to the time they open at 1 p.m.
Once they open, employees will then switch gears and start greeting guests who come in looking to adopt an animal. Employees will show them animals up for adoption with the hope they find them a perfect match.
“We know that shelter life is not the best place for these animals, so we work really hard at trying to make it as comfortable and loving as possible so that we can get them ready for their forever homes,” said Heidi Mitchell, Executive Director of the Terre Haute Humane Society.
Mitchell added that it cost them roughly $50,000 a month to keep the shelter running.
The humane society also runs an animal food pantry where pet owners can go to get supplies for their animals and a foster program where people can sign up to take a sick, injured or unsocialized animal. They are also hoping to get their vet clinic open in the coming months.
If you’re thinking about donating to the Tail-A-Thon you can do so by clicking here or by calling 812-460-8447. Mitchell said there is no better feeling than receiving a donation, no matter the size, because it shows how much the community really cares about these animals and their mission.
“It is amazing to get that backing from the community because we love our animals and we know that there are others that love them too. To know that people are supporting us and supporting what we do to take care of the animals so they can find their homes, it is indescribable. It is awesome that we have an amazing community that backs us, supports us, and loves the animals just as much as we do,” said Mitchell.
