Carlisle, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The town of Carlisle in Indiana experienced a water outage due to a pump malfunction, resulting in a synchronous learning day for Carlisle School and a 3-day boil order once the water is restored.
Bus routes will run as normal for students attending Sullivan High School.
As of Wednesday morning, the town posted on Facebook that the water towers are beginning to reach minimum levels and expects water to be restored to the town later Wednesday morning.
The Town of Carlisle, Indiana posted a statement on Facebook around 10:00 p.m. Tuesday, it read:
“Town of Carlisle: We truly apologize for the water inconvenience. We also live in this town and understand how inconvenient this issue is.
Today, we had an inspection of the WVCF water tower. During this process, we had to empty this water tower completely. When doing this, it revealed that the valves that were supposed to separate the two water towers (small & large) had failed resulting in both tanks emptying at the same time. This was an unexpected issue and has been dealt with throughout the day/evening.
At this time, we are currently waiting for the water towers to fill back up to a usable level. It is expected to take several hours to reach the minimum level that is needed.
Please be patient with us while this issue is being resolved. This was a new experience for us. We have learned from this and will be sure to keep the towns people informed as events occur.”

The town notified residents through social media on Tuesday afternoon that the water tower at the prison in Carlisle was undergoing an inspection. Due to the pump malfunctioning the town experienced a loss of pressure. Once water is restored a 3-day boil order will be implemented.
WTWO reached out to the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in Carlisle and is awaiting a response.
The CDC’s guidance for how to properly boil water during these situations is as follows:
- Fill a pot with water.
- Heat the water until bubbles come from the bottom of the pot to the top.
- Once the water reaches a rolling boil, let it boil for 1 minute.
- Turn off the heat source and let the water cool.
- Pour the water into a clean container with a cover for storage.
