VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — If you or someone you know is in need of a wheelchair ramp, Thrive West Central has a new program that could help.
The organization has started its Ramp-up Indiana program, sponsored by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.
They award grants to agencies, such as Thrive, which is now facilitating the funding to eligible homeowners.
Homeowners in Vigo and Clay Counties who meet the income requirements for help, and some social service benefits like SNAP or Medicaid will automatically qualify homeowners.
Vice President of Aging at Thrive West Central, Jessica Taylor-Rendon, said the need for ramps in Vigo and Clay County are at an all-time high.
“Approximately 20% of ER visits that are related to falls occur outside of the home”, Taylor-Rendon said. “We at Thrive receive more than 300 requests for ramps each year. The existing programming and funding that we work with has extensive waitlists, so the Ramp-up program is going to provide some relief and get some ramps at the homes of people who need them right now.”
