TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Standard procedure when riding public transportation is to board, pay, and then enjoy your ride.
However, not in Terre Haute, as the city has implemented heir no fare policy on city buses.
Mayor Brandon Sakbun said they have seen a 50% increase in ridership since the policy was implemented, but more riders has caused some new issues.
“We are going to release some graphics and information on what carry-on items you can bring, but the vast majority of the feedback is positive”, Sakbun said. “We are connecting individuals to grocery stores, employment, resources in the community and that’s the true purpose of this program.”
One of those residents is Robin Lane, an Indiana State student that has been taking the city bus between school and work the past couple of years, because she can’t drive.
“It’s a lot better than walking place”, Lane said. “I can’t drive yet. I have panic attacks, so they won’t let me get my own license yet.”
Lane said the new policy is saving her money.
“It’s helped out a ton”, Lane said. “It costs a lot to do the buses. It’s not as much as like Uber and stuff like that, but it adds up when you’re in college and can only work part time. It adds up. I don’t know exactly how much I’ve saved, but I’ve saved money for sure.”
Mayor Sakbun said with the increase in riders, the Terre Haute Transportation Department has a number of open employment opportunities as well.
