TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The Terre Haute City Council continues to work to bring two more hotels to downtown Terre Haute.
Thursday night the council approved the redevelopment commission to issue $6.9 million worth of bonds. The money will be part of an incentive package to encourage developers to bring two hotels a parking garage and two sky bridges to the area of 7th street and Wabash Avenue. The hotels are needed so people attending conventions at the Terre Haute Convention Center will have a place to sleep.
“For the convention center to better perform there needs to be more hotel rooms in proximity to it.” said Todd Nation, President of the Terre Haute City Council.
The city council president said in all, developers will receive about $17 million in incentives for the $69 million dollar project. Nation said the first hotel is expected to bring 114 rooms. The second hotel will have about 90 rooms.
