WASHINGTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Everyday an average of 60 students attends after school programs at The Powerhouse.
With such a large number, the organization knew they needed a larger building. It received a $250,000 grant from Our Community Foundation which got it to the finish line for its 1.5-million-dollar project.
The executive director of Our Community Foundation Chris Jarrett said The Powerhouse is extremely valuable to the community.
“The fact that they can come here to this safe place and be mentored by community leaders and people that care is just such a great thing for our youth in the community,” said Jarrett.
The Powerhouse’s executive director T.C. Cook said this expansion is going to open many doors for the organization.
“This is going to help us do more programming inside of that, but it is also going to allow us to have more kids,” said Cook. “When it is crammed, kids usually don’t want to come hang out when it is shoulder-to-shoulder, so now that we are going to be able to spread out and do more, it is going to be incredible.”
Cook said he is forever grateful the community has been behind them and this project from the beginning.
“They actually want to see youth grow and actually be a part of our society here in Daviess County and have opportunities,” said Cook. “They see us as a way to support and help that. We are going to continue to do what we do and hopefully now on a larger scale.”
Cook said they are planning to open the new facility by spring of 2026.
