TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – February is Black History Month and the City of Terre Haute is celebrating by unveiling new banners downtown.
The banners will feature local honorees, recognizing their impact on the Terre Haute community.
The first banner unveiled Wednesday morning features Terre Haute Olympian Dr. Gregory Bell. Bell, who recently passed away, was a Garfield High School graduate and won a gold medal in the long jump at the 1956 Olympics in Australia. The former dentist also attended Indiana University.
Terre Haute Human Relations Commission Executive Director Anne-Therese Ryan said a total of 30 banners will be on display downtown throughout the month of February.
“This is such a wonderful initiative to hear from community members about who have been the change makers, the leaders, the mentors in that have come through their life and of course deserve to be regonized as leaders and heroes within our community,” said Ryan.
She added that the City of Terre Haute Facebook page will also post about each of the honorees throughout February.
