TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, the Vigo County Library held a story hour Saturday morning.
The event was open to kids ages five and up to be introduced to MLK’s background and life story.
Terre Haute Mayor, Brandon Sakbun, made a special appearance.
He read a book titled Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport before the kids were given free time for arts and crafts.
Before they left, each child was given their choice of a free book, celebrating Dr. King’s life, work, and message.
The event was coordinated between the Mayor’s Office and the City of Terre Haute.
The Executive Director of Human Relations for Terre Haute, Anne-Therese Ryan, says they wanted to give kids a better understanding of history.
“We’re always hoping that children learn a little bit more about Martin Luther King Jr.”, Ryan said. “A lot of people know his face, know his name, but we did read a book about him that shared a little bit about his life story. It used quotes throughout his life to share a little bit about how he got from childhood to being a civil rights leader. We wanted children to learn a little more about him and be able to take that home and talk more with their families about that.”
The Human Relations Commission is also hosting a panel discussion on Monday.
The topic is how can we achieve peace in our community.
The event will start at 6:00 p.m. and all are welcome to attend.
