TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Tuesday morning Andre Obua, the suspect in an attempted murder case of a Terre Haute doctor, had his formal arraignment.
“This morning was his formal arraignment in which an attorney appeared for the defendant and waived that, so the court set dates,” said Vigo County Prosecutor, Terry Modesitt. “We filed a motion to increase his bond today.”
On January 8, suspect Andre Obua allegedly followed Dr. Manish Gera back to his home from his workplace. Court documents said he allegedly fired multiple shots at Gera, at one point hitting Gera in the forearm.
However, Gera was able to fight off Obua until law enforcement got there and detained him. Modesitt explains the severity of this case.
“In this case we have filed count one, an attempted murder charge, count 2 burglary, count 3 burglary, and count 4 strangulation,” said Modesitt. “We also filed a gun enhancement penalty on the case since a firearm was used allegedly of the alleged attempted murder.”
Modesitt said while formal charges have been filed detectives are still gathering and examining their evidence.
“We have cellphones and weapons that are going to be sent off to get tested,” said Modesitt. “We are still trying to see if there are any more witnesses we need to take statements from, so that is where we are at this point. This is early on in the case, so the investigation is continuing on at this point.”
Obua is currently being held on a $750,000 bond. He will return to court on January 23 for a hearing about that bond amount.
