TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Former President Jimmy Carter was honored locally in Vincennes after his passing.
The Grouseland Foundation home of the ninth President of the United States, William Henry Harrison, houses a memorial display for Carter. The display consists of a photograph of Carter with his original signature, an American flag, and a candle.
The foundation has a complete collection of original presidential signatures on historical documents, with the exception of the two most recent presidents. When a president passes away, Director Lisa Ice-Jones said they like to make them accessible to the public.
Visitors can visit the display in person during the foundation’s regular visiting hours.
“As a presidential site and interpreting history, we are a 501C3 not for profit foundation. So, we provide a lot of service to the public and teaching history, and teaching about the constitution, and teaching about our country. So, that made it relevant to honor President Carter in this way. You know he was a great humanitarian. He loved America and so that resonates with us here,” Ice-Jones said.
The Grouseland Foundation’s visiting hours are Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 4.
