TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTTWO/WAWV)— A 9-year-old fell through the ice at Willow Crossings apartment complex.
According to a member of the Honey Creek Fire Department, the boy fell through the ice of a pond in the complex after walking out onto the ice around 1:40 p.m. Tuesday.
The fire department confirmed that an adult bystander had seen the child in the water and retrieved the boy by the time they were able to respond to the incident. The fire department said both the bystander and child were checked out by the fire department and the boy was taken to a local hospital where he was later released.
This is the second ice-based rescue that the Honey Creek Fire Department has been to recently, the other dealing with a dog that fell through the ice.
The Honey Creek Fire Department would like to remind everyone that even though the temperatures are down, the ice is nowhere thick enough to support an adult or child’s weight. The department representative stated that it only takes a short time for the body to shut down in these temperatures and urged people to not take any chances with the thin ice in the area.
