FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Indianapolis American Heart Association is sharing how to know when it’s time to take a break from shoveling snow.
Its board president Dr. William Gill said this vigorous activity in such cold weather causes blood pressure to rise which could lead to heart emergencies. He advises everyone to pace themselves, listen to their bodies, and not try to get everything done all at once.
Gill explains the warning signs of when people should take a break or call 9-1-1.
“If we are feeling like we are starting to get breathless or having any symptoms of central chest pressures, pain, or discomfort are excellent warning signs that we should slow down, stop, or go in and warm up,” said Gill. “If these symptoms persist, we should call 9-1-1 to get help.”
Gill says do not try to tough out the symptoms. Reach out for help immediately if symptoms if occur.
