VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Vigo County Commissioners will be meeting next week to address event security, in response to the New Year’s attack in New Orleans.
In a statement on social media, commissioner Chris Switzer said, “Monday, Commissioners will meet Vigo County Highway Department leadership to discuss how we can help ensure the safety of our friends and families as they attend street fairs and festivals.”
Switzer tells WTWO that the move comes following the deadly truck-ramming attack in New Orleans that killed 15 and injured scores of others.
His statement went on to say, “With enough notice, and specifically dedicated entrances and exits. I believe we can utilize concrete blocks or barricades to prevent vehicular incidents. This is something we are going to take very seriously moving forward.”
Switzer tells WTWO that there are not as many events in the county as there are in the city, however, they have large equipment that can help with Terre Haute events. Commissioners plan to reach out to festival organizers to let them know they are there to help keep those events safe.
