ROCKVILLE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A New Year’s Day tradition continued at state parks around Indiana on Wednesday.
The event, called First Day Hikes, gave people the opportunity to attend guided hikes at state parks.
At Raccoon State Recreation Area, Interpretive Naturalist Ross Plotkin said Wednesday’s hike gave visitors the chance to see hidden features around the lake that are easier to see in the winter season.
Mary Taylor attended the hike and explained why she wanted to participate.
“I came out today just to challenge myself. Not so much a New Year’s resolution, but to start a journey in my life, to transform myself and to do everything I want to do in my life, and one of them is being in nature,” said Taylor.
Plotkin said events like this are great way to get people outdoors and give them a new outlook on the year.
“I mentioned to one person today, this is a brisk way to wake up for the new year. So, it’s a great experience, a great way to make memories for folks. Some of these folks come every single year,” said Plotkin.
He added that around 50 to 60 people typically attend the park’s First Day Hike and estimated Wednesday’s event saw a similar number of attendees.
