TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Gerri Varner, a prominent member of the RiverScape Board, has been given the Sagamore of the Wabash Award.
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb presented the award to Varner after being nominated by State Representative Tonya Pfaff of Terre Haute. The award is one of the highest honors someone can receive as a citizen of Indiana and is given to those who have made significant contributions to the state and community.
Reflecting on her work, Varner shared, “Although I have been involved with many community organizations over the years, my work with RiverScape has been the most transformative for our community. I am proud to be part of an amazing team of Terre Haute citizens who are revitalizing the Wabash River and its riverfront in incredible ways.”
Varner earned the award for many contributions to the community but is most well known for being the one who came up with RiverScape’s signature fundraiser Moonlight on the Wabash. Despite her leadership, Varner gave credit to everyone who has worked on transforming the city’s relationship with the riverfront.
