TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – An effort to build tiny homes for local veterans in need received additional support on Thursday.
American Legion Post 104 donated $5,000 to the Veterans Village project in Terre Haute.
The project, by the Terre Haute Area Association of Realtors (THAAR), is building tiny homes for veterans at Maple Avenue and North 23rd Street.
THAAR Treasurer Tom Chiado said Thursday there is still some work to do on the interior of the homes. He explained community donations and volunteers have been making the project possible.
“We’ve been very fortunate. The community has really supported us and provided lots of donations. The donations all went for materials. We’ve been absolutely fortunate because a lot of the local unions have stepped up and volunteered their labor,” said Chiado.
American Legion Post 104 Commander Troy Davis explained why they wanted to support the effort.
“That’s the most important thing that an American Legion can do is help out veterans. All these fine folks here have given all their time and money, and everything to this, and so now we are too. It’s just going to be wonderful. These places are really neat,” said Davis.
Chiado said there are also future plans to construct an additional building on the property. He said that building will have a laundry room and spaces for group meetings.
