FARMERSBURG, Ind. WTWO/WAWV) — Fans of Sullivan’s ‘Kat a Korner’ can now have a similar experience in Farmersburg.
Owner Fred Richey said the success of ‘Kat a Korner’ inspired him to expand the brand. Richey explained that his daughter rose through the ranks and now serves as the General Manager at Kat-A-Korner which he said freed him up for other opportunities.
“This building (Korner Kup, originally Dairy Queen) came available and I’ve always had my eye on it anyway, it’s a great location, a great community, and I thought I could put the concept back in here that the building was made for and give something for everyone in the community,” Rickey said. “As a family, we came together and talked about it, and now, here we are,” he added.
The restaurant was inspired by times gone by.
“I talked to a lot of the residents, local business owners, and I hear stories about the old root beer stand and the ‘White Swan’ that used to be here and just all the history that came along with that and I wanted to kind of meld that together and give it all in one space,” he said.
Korner Kup is a counter-style, quick-service restaurant. Dine-in, a drive-thru, and carryout are available. Richey said his goal is to offer great customer service with a family-oriented atmosphere.
“Just because we’re counter service doesn’t mean we aren’t going to elevate our customer service,” he said. “I think it’s important to have a local eatery where the kids feel like they can come to kick back and hang out, the adults can still come and get their breakfast or whatever they like, and just fill a need, and provide some local jobs,” he added.
Richey is thankful for the supportive community and local businesses who take care of each other.
“Krocs, back behind me, has been awesome to work with. We get several of our products from them. From cinnamon rolls, premium cheese, and fresh sliced meats, our sausage is ground fresh from them every day. So, buying and helping support local, just like they support us is very important to me.”
What can you expect at Korner Kup?
“There’s a lot of things that are the same as ‘Kat a Korner,’ but we offer ice cream, soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps, breaded tenderloins, and burgers,” Richey said. “We’ve got the “Thunder Burger” with spicy bacon jam on it and it’s going over very well. The breakfast is very similar to Kat-A-Korner but the menu’s not as large. We don’t have nearly the cooking space that we do at Kat-A-Korner. So, we had to shrink it down and make it quick for the drive-thru, but the gravy, biscuits and gravy, the eggs, all that’s still the same.”
For convenience, the restaurant offers a grab-and-go drink cooler, donuts that are made fresh daily, and a wide variety of coffee and energy drinks.
“The theme here is like Starbucks meets Dairy Queen meets, the old guy from Kat-A-Korner,” Richey joked. “The drink selection ranges anywhere from multiple flavors of boba to ‘fu-fu coffees’, as I call them,” he said. “You can get a scoop of your favorite ice cream, topped with whipped cream, and a shot of espresso poured over that, man that’s addicting,” he added.
