JASONVILLE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — UPDATE: Officials in Jasonville say they will have a limited supply of bottled water to give to water customers. In a statement, Jasonville Utilities said, “Attention Jasonville customers! LIMITED bottled water is available. Distribution will take place directly behind the Jasonville water office. Please enter from 48 and exit onto Cook Street.”
According to Greene County EMA Director Roger Axe, help is on the way. “We have emergency water coming in. We have vendors that have been very good such as Walmart who have helped us by providing water. we are reaching out to other vendors around the county and around the state for help.” Jasonville Mayor Eric Siepman said they are working with another water provider to get water flowing through the pipes again. “We have put a plan in place to circumvent the current system on a temporary basis while we get the current structure rebuilt…I am hoping by the week’s end that we will be operational, but that is just my positive thinking on this.”
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security and Indiana National Guard on Monday delivered water to the nearly 5,500 residents of the three locations without water. Potable and drinking water can be obtained at any of these three locations until service is restored: 145 South Lawton Street in Jasonville from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., 6440 West Public Road in Coalmont from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and 406 North Vine Street in Hymera from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional water is also being coordinated for delivery to nearby grocery stores.
UPDATE: Officials in Hymera are warning residents to be prepared to be without water for a week, following an overnight fire at the Jasonville water plant.
In a statement, Hymera Water said, “We will need to prepare to be without water for a week. They have a plan to get us back on line, but it will take days. We are working to get bottled water here in town for everyone on our system. Bulk water will be available also. Bottled water and hand sanitizer will be available at our water office once we are established. We will keep you updated when supplies are here. Thank you.”
Many people are without water, this morning, following an overnight fire at the Jasonville water plant.
This fire came as repairs were getting underway at the water treatment plant from a car that crashed there in February. In a statement on Facebook, Jasonville Utilities said, “Attention: Citizens, due to a fire at our water filtration plant the city of Jasonville and all users of Jasonville water will be without water until service can be reinstated. We will share information with you as it becomes available.”
Shakamak Schools announced it will be on an e-learning day Monday due to the water outage.
The Thunderbird Fire Protection Territory says the plant supplies water to Jasonville, Coalmont and Hymera.
In Hymera, officials are urging residents to conserve water, saying on Facebook, “Jasonville has lost their water plant tonight in a fire. They have shut all the towers down at this time. We are asking Wilfred to switch over to the Shelburn water system. We will continue to feed off our tower at this time. The storage of water should get Hymera through today, Monday, 12-9-24. We should know more throughout the day. Please be conservative with what water we have.”
“My first concern when I got the call last night were the people in Good Samaritan Nursing Home because these are people who are at risk, people in a special population, and cannot take care of themselves,” said Greene County EMA Director Roger Axe. “We wanted to make sure that they are taken care of and provided for.”
