TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Rose-Hulman students made their mark Saturday on Christmas in the Wabash Valley as it was bike assembly day.
For the 26th consecutive year, students used their problem-solving skills to assist Terre Haute’s Chances and Services for Youth organization in presenting bicycles to local families in need.
Volunteers included Rose-Hulman fraternity and sorority members, athletic teams, and university RAs.
Chances and Services for Youth says they partner with companies such as Walmart and Pepsi to make this event happen.
Chief Operating Officer for CASY, Brandon Halleck, says the process takes a lot of time and there are many moving parts, but the students are the key in making it all work.
“We work with the school corporation to find children in need, as well as other community centers here in town. From there, we order them through Walmart and bring them out here to Rose-Hulman. The fraternities and sororities out here at Rose-Hulman are really the ones that take the lead in organizing and making sure the assembly goes pretty quickly. They’re going to assemble probably 250 bikes in about an hour and a half or so.”
Each bicycle was inspected by Human Powered Vehicle team members for safety and the Indiana Department of Transportation provided each bicycle with a safety helmet.
