TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – As tax season approaches, a local business is sharing tips to help you avoid falling victim to scams.
Stadler & Company Regional Manager Lori Carpenter, EA, says there is a lot of bad advice floating around on social media and warns that if something sounds too good to be true, it most likely is.
Carpenter encourages people to fact-check everything with either IRS.gov or a licensed tax professional such as an enrolled agent.
She warns that if you’re not careful, you could end up filing a tax return that will cost you thousands of dollars.
“If you file a bad tax return based on somebody else’s advice or if somebody else files a bad tax return for you, you are still responsible for that tax and you are the one who’s going to pay the penalties, the interest, and the tax that comes about. So, you want to make sure that you’re doing it right and avoid all of that,” said Carpenter.
She adds that the IRS has a Dirty Dozen list of tax scams to beware of, which you can read about here.
